The Samuel Jordan Graham Scholarship in Academic Surgery

The Department of Surgery is requesting applications for the Samuel Jordan Graham Award . This annual award is given to that student, selected by the Department, who by virtue of clinical excellence, scholarship, and leadership is considered to have the most promise for a career in academic surgery. Applicants will be considered who are planning to apply for residency training in either General Surgery or one of the following Surgical Specialties: Cardiothoracic, Otolaryngology, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Vascular. 

Eligibility: Yale MD or MD PhD students in good standing, as verified by the Office of the Dean, who have completed all core clinical rotations and have at least one year remaining before graduation. 

Award details: For the MD students, the award will pay for up to one year of tuition (including remaining, outstanding loans and any out-of-pocket payments). For the MDPhD students, having no tuition costs, the amount of a year’s tuition will be donated to the School of Medicine for undesignated financial aid. The award winner will receive a plaque and a Yale chair and will be honored at a Surgery Grand Rounds.

Application:
  1. Completed application form and current CV
  2. One page statement of interest emphasizing educational/academic accomplishments, personal goals, and motivation for pursuing a career in academic surgery
  3. Three letters of recommendation, at least one from a member of the Yale Surgery faculty
Interview: Selection Committee will interview qualified candidates between June 15 and July 10. 

Recipient responsibilities:
  1. Sometime prior to graduation, at a venue determined by the Department, the recipient will present a 10 minute overview of his/her academic interests and accomplishments
  2. The recipient will be expected to submit an annual update to the Department detailing his/her training progress, academic productivity, and career plans
