Pre- and Post-Surgery Instructions

Instructions before Surgery

Make your 2 week post-op appointment today before you leave the office!

In preparation for your surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, York Street Campus. Your doctor would like you to do the following: 

  • No Motrin or Ibuprofen products for 7 days before surgery. Aspirin may be allowed consult your surgeon or cardiologist first. Tylenol is okay. 
  • If you smoke, make every effort to quit or greatly reduce the amount you smoke before surgery. 
  • The week before your surgery, if you develop a cough, cold, sore throat, toothache, or flu symptoms you must call and inform your surgeon.

The Day before Surgery:

You may be given special diet instructions. Please follow them carefully. If a bowel preparation was ordered, follow the instructions carefully. Please try to move bowels the day before surgery this will help to avoid constipation after surgery. You may shower or bathe the night before or the morning of the surgery. 

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY. This includes chewing gum, hard candies, breath mints, or any other form of foods/treats.

The Day of Surgery:

  • You may brush your teeth the morning of surgery, but do not swallow any water. 
  • Leave all valuables and jewelry at home. 
  • Do not wear make-up or nail polish the day of surgery. 
  • No Chewing gum, hard candies, breath mints, tic tacs, etc the day of surgery!

Instructions after Surgery:

For the first two weeks after surgery

Coughing and breathing: 

  • Take 3 deep breaths every hour and cough once or twice immediately afterwards. 


  • Follow the specific instructions of your surgeon 
  • You may go up and down stairs 
  • You may be a passenger in a car (no driving) 
  • No submersion (baths, pools, hot tubs, Jacuzzi) for two weeks 
  • You may shower only 

Dressing Changes: 

  • Most dressings should be removed the day after surgery and do not need to be replaced. Unless instructed by your surgeon, you will not need to apply any medicine or creams to your incisions. 
  • If needed, ask for specific wound care instructions before you leave the hospital. 


  • You cannot drive for one week while you are taking narcotics. 
  • Follow the restrictions provided to you by your physician. 


  • Carefully follow the instructions provided to you by your provider and the office staff. Call the Office with any questions about the diet at 203-785-6060. 

Pain Medication: 

  • Before you leave the hospital, your doctor will give you a written prescription for pain medication. 
  • Strong Pain medications can only be obtained with a written prescription and cannot be faxed or called into the pharmacy. 
  • Fill in the prescription and keep it on hand. 

Please call your surgeon (203-785-6060) if you experience any of the following: 

  • Fever of 101 Degrees F or above. 
  • Redness or swelling of incision. 
  • Chills, Nausea, Vomiting 
  • Calf Pain 
  • If you are constipated take Milk of Magnesia 2 tablespoons every 12 hours and increase your water intake. Water is key to relieving constipation.

To Confirm your surgery time:

The working day before your surgery ie: Friday for a Monday surgery, between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm call the hospital at: 

  • 203-688-5874 (if you will be admitted after surgery) OR 
  • 203-688-4107 (for outpatient surgery).

Directions & Parking

The address of the hospital is 20 York Street, New Haven CT 06510. 

  • If you are One day or same day surgery you may use valet parking at no charge, which is available at the front of the main entrance of the hospital.
  • Once inside the hospital proceed to the admitting office, which is located on the first floor towards the right.
  • There are security guards and visitor desks to ask for directions.
  • You must make arrangements for a ride home. You may not take the bus home.
