Malignant Pleural Mesotheliomas

Malignant pleural mesotheliomas are cancers that originate in the inner lining of the chest and/or mediastinum (the central part of the chest). This cancer is a relatively rare disease that has a strong link to asbestos exposure, among other agents. Patients may have symptoms of pain or discomfort directly related to the cancer, or they may have symptoms related to the fluid that develops around the lung because of the cancer. The diagnosis and staging of this disease are complex and best performed by thoracic oncology experts such as the thoracic surgeons at Yale. Owing to the relative rarity and aggressiveness of this type of cancer, the diagnosis and treatment of this disease is best done on an individualized basis. Surgery may play a role in either case and is best determined and conducted by our world-class surgeons.
