At Yale Thoracic Surgery, our surgeons offer their expertise in dealing with benign tumors of the chest. Not all tumors of the chest are necessarily cancerous, but they still may need surgical attention for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons include the presence of symptoms, such as pain, or a concern that a cancerous tumor needs to be ruled out. There are multiple causes of these benign tumors, and their location sometimes helps in characterizing the tissue of origin. Removing these tumors may involve a range of operations that include either minimally invasive (thoracoscopic or robotic) or open approaches. Ultimately, the safest and best approach will be selected based upon the tumor type, location, and judgment of the thoracic surgeon.
As faculty of the Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery, our nationally and internationally renowned surgeons are continually redefining standards of care through their comprehensive skill, innovative procedures, ongoing research and the application of evidence-based medicine.
